On 2 December, on the eve of International Day of People with Disability, a vibrant and colourful mural painted by Bindi Mwerre Anthurre artist, Billy Tjampijinpa Kenda, was launched in Alice Springs.

The 22 metre long mural, made possible through a $25,000 grant from Arts NT to the Alice Springs Public Library and Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists Studio, now features on the exterior wall of the Library.

Billy is a Luritja/Pitjantjatjara man and this exciting public art installation reflects his observations on life in and around Mparntwe (Alice Springs).

Known for his playful use of narrative in his paintings, Billy’s signature style reflects the unique character of the region. The growth of tourism is shown through the helicopters and caravans. Town camp life, the local community and the Red Centre’s iconic ranges and landscape are vividly captured.

It’s also a personal piece reflecting aspects of Billy’s life. The town camp depicted in the mural is based on the town camp where his sister lives. The artist himself is seen pointing to The Ghan as it goes past the camp as his sister sits next to him painting in the shade of a house. There are also young children playing as their grandfather waves to the passing Bindi postal van.

The team at Bindi has been incredibly supportive of Billy throughout the mural’s creation. From working with Billy on the original concept to helping with some of the technical aspects around how the mural will finally be hung, it’s been a very collaborative process and everyone is thrilled with the final work.

Billy is a respected and awarded artist and this stunning mural is another inspiring piece to add to his portfolio.
