You may have heard that the Federal Government recently announced some changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Changes like these can bring uncertainty. We want to communicate with you directly to share what this means and to reassure you that we’re here to support.

The NDIS is a vital part of our community, supporting thousands of Australians with disability to live life their way.  It is important that the scheme remains strong and is shaped by the voices and experiences of people who rely on it every day

What is changing?

Over the next 2 to 4 years, a series of changes will be progressively introduced, beginning from June 2026. The key changes are outlined below:

• Eligibility
  In the future, access to the NDIS will be based on how someone’s disability affects their daily life, not just their diagnosis. This may make it harder for people with lower support needs to access the NDIS and they may be supported by other services in the community. This change is expected to start from February 2027.
• Plan reassessments
  This year, new rules will be introduced that mean that plans will be reassessed less often outside of the usual schedule, unless there are significant changes to support needs.
• Community and social participation
  From October 2026, support budgets for social and community participation will be reviewed and re-set. This is likely to reduce the funds available in individual plans. To support this, the government is also creating a new $200 million ‘Inclusive Communities Fund’ to improve access to social and community participation outside the NDIS.
• Support coordination and plan management
  Changes will be made to how support coordination and plan management services are provided. From October 2027, participants may need to choose plan management providers from a government-approved list. A similar approach may also be introduced for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers. The new support coordination approach is expected to begin from July 2028.
• Provider registration and quality
  More providers will need to be officially registered, especially those delivering higher-risk supports like personal care and daily living supports. These changes will happen from 2027 onwards.
• Pricing and payments
  A new digital payment system will be introduced from July 2026 and rolled out by 2030 to make payments easier to track and help the government investigate to prevent fraud.

What happens next?

As a registered provider, we welcome the stronger provider registration requirements across the sector to ensure services are safe, high quality, consistent, and accountable.

As these changes take effect, we’re ready to work closely with you, the government, and the NDIA.  We want to make sure your voice is heard in these conversations.
